How to Choose a wood floor

How to choose a wood floor . .

With over 25 years of helping customers to choose the right floor, here are a few tips to get you started . . .

What style is your home?  Sleek prime grade woods, super wide planks and oversize Herringbone floors are perfect in Contemporary homes.  A traditional townhouse may suit a traditional pattern floor with borders or a narrower plank floor.  Country style homes look fabulous with Rustic woods, lots of knots and grain and textured finishes.

Do you have underfloor heating?  We are seeing a steady increase of new build homes and extensions with underfloor heating.  We recommend an engineered wood floor and the use of a Fidbox monitor that links to your smartphone and will monitor temperature and humidity to keep your floor in perfect condition.

What finish?  Think about the look that you want to achieve and how much maintenance you are able to do.  Natural oil finishes give a beautiful soft look and you can really feel the wood grain.  Oil needs a bit more regular maintenance but can be more easily spot repaired and maintained.  Lacquer is a great choice for low maintenance and high traffic areas, there are some fantastic modern lacquers that leave the wood looking completely raw but protected.

Take your time!  A real wood floor is an investment and possibly the biggest piece of furniture that you will purchase for your home.  Make sure that you have the opportunity to look at large size samples and are able to view samples in your own home, showroom lighting can be deceptive.  If you are visiting the showroom bring fabric and paint swatches, even cupboard doors as well as your favourite images!
