Bespoke Chevron Wood Flooring in a West Kirby Victorian Home — A Living Floors Chester Project
There is something quietly extraordinary about a chevron floor coming together in a period home. The geometry echoes the craftsmanship of the original architecture. Yet it still feels entirely contemporary. In this West Kirby project, that balance was exactly what our clients wanted. It’s also what made Woodworks by Ted Todd ‘Villes’ Chevron the natural choice.
The Brief
Our clients had recently renovated their large Victorian detached home in West Kirby. This is one of the Wirral Peninsula’s most sought-after villages. They had opened up the ground floor to create a flowing, connected living space. It’s the kind of generous, light-filled interior that these late Victorian properties do so well when updated sympathetically.
The brief was clear. They wanted a floor that would unite the entire ground floor. It needed to complement the period character of the property. Importantly, it also had to work beautifully with the newly installed underfloor heating. Above all, it had to feel genuinely bespoke. Off-the-shelf simply wouldn’t do here. After all, this was a home that deserved considered specification.
The Specification: Woodworks by Ted Todd ‘Villes’ Chevron
Woodworks by Ted Todd sits at the top tier of British wood flooring craftsmanship. Skilled hands finish each board in Cheshire. As a result, every plank carries a level of character that mass-produced alternatives simply cannot replicate. For this West Kirby project, we specified the ‘Villes’ Chevron.
The ‘Villes’ colourway is beautifully restrained. It’s a very neutral, light tone that brings warmth without weight. In turn, this breathes extra space into an already generous interior. Meanwhile, the hand rolled edges soften the geometry of the chevron pattern. This gives the floor a crafted, artisanal quality that suits a Victorian setting perfectly. The burnished hardwax oil finish then adds both depth and durability. It’s a practical choice for a busy family home, and a beautiful one too.
Crucially, Woodworks by Ted Todd works fully with underfloor heating systems. Therefore, it was the ideal specification for this particular ground floor renovation.
The Installation Challenge
A project like this is never simply about laying a floor. Victorian properties bring their own particular challenges, and this West Kirby home was no exception.
Subfloor preparation came first. The team needed to carry out substantial groundwork before laying a single board. We specified Wakol products throughout for this stage. Flooring contractors across Europe trust this professional-grade system for its reliability in demanding conditions. Getting the subfloor right matters enormously. It’s the work nobody sees, yet everybody feels underfoot for years to come.
The open plan layout added further complexity. A chevron pattern demands precision at the best of times. However, achieving a seamless flow through multiple connected spaces raised the stakes considerably. The team also had to negotiate carefully around a central fireplace. Maintaining the geometry of the design throughout took careful planning and highly skilled installation. So, our team mapped the floor meticulously before cutting a single board. This ensured the pattern ran true from room to room. It also meant the fireplace became the centrepiece it deserved to be, rather than an obstacle to work around.
Ultimately, the finished ground floor reads as a single, considered whole. That’s exactly what an open plan space requires.
The Result
The finished floor delivers everything the brief asked for, and more. The ‘Villes’ Chevron, in its light and neutral tone, reflects the natural light flooding through this West Kirby home’s generous Victorian windows. Consequently, the spaces feel even larger and more connected. The burnished hardwax oil finish gives the floor a living quality too. It will improve with age, and homeowners can maintain and refresh it easily in years to come.
Additionally, the hand rolled edges and hand finished character of the Woodworks collection mean no two boards look quite identical. In a home with this much architectural personality, that detail matters.
